What Happened to the Railroad!#?
In July 1988, The Tropicana Express opened under the name Ramada Express.
From 1988 until 2010, the Tropicana Express operated the 3/4 mile long, 3 ft (914 mm) narrow gauge Tropicana Express Railroad, which looped around its grounds. Rolling stock consisted of 3 open passenger cars, a diesel-powered 4-4-0 steam locomotive named #7 Gambler, and a Plymouth Locomotive Works engine #11 named Lucky Lady used as a spare.
In April 2012, the casino donated the rolling stock to the Las Vegas Railroad Society. All equipment was trucked from Laughlin to an undisclosed location for storage near Las Vegas until a new track is installed in the society’s proposed park.
In May 2007, Columbia Essex Hotels announced that the Ramada Express would be changing its name to the Tropicana Express. The hotel opened as the Tropicana Express on July 28, 2007. The hotel has been operating under the name “Tropicana Laughlin” since 2010.
